Sabrina Fair
Sabrina Fair
by Samuel A. Taylor
directed by Stephen Rayne
October 1-24, 2010
With sparkling wit and intelligence, Sabrina Fair considers true love hindered by class, race and social conventions. When the daughter of the Larrabees’ chauffeur returns after five years in Paris, she bewitches the Larrabee brothers with her youthful vitality and newly found sophistication. Largely ignored as a child, Sabrina now finds suitors at every turn, including the handsome playboy David, for whom she has always harbored affection. But is David the right Larrabee brother for her? Stephen Rayne (The Heavens Are Hung In Black) directs this delightful modern twist on the Cinderella story.
This production is appropriate for ages 13 and up. Sabrina Fair is approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, including intermission.
Reviews:
“Charming ... gorgeously designed ... blessedly adult. Susan Heyward, as Sabrina, not only sparkles in the role, but pertly reasons her way through the character's dilemmas. In her own way, Heyward does what [Audrey] Hepburn did: face complexity with a light style. All that may make Heyward first among equals in a cast that's uncommonly blessed with intelligence and grace.”
-The Washington Post
“Fleet of foot and light of touch! It all adds up to one of the glossiest, best-unified, most effortless entertainments seen for some while hereabouts; that it’s got real heart, to boot, makes it pretty much a winner on all fronts.”
-Washington City Paper
“Sabrina Fair is a beautifully turned out love story tinged with enough reality to ground it, but not so much as to break its own powerful spell. It's almost like being in love.”
-Metro Weekly
“Director Stephen Rayne and a likable cast take the sweetness and whimsical romance of childhood tales and spike them with wit, intelligence, and humor.”
-The Washingtonian
“Without exception, the cast was brilliant. Susan Heyward’s Sabrina was strong, idealistic, touching and fully alive. Her encounters with Todd Gearhart, who played the charmingly ruthless Linus Larrabee, fairly crackled with intensity. Tom Story’s David Larrabee was endearing and sweet. Sabrina Fair is an entertaining and delightful way to spend an evening.”
-Washington Life
“Sabrina Fair charms! Susan Heyward does a lovely job as the sparkling and high-spirited Sabrina.”
-DC Theatre Scene
