Lewis Powell

The revolver used by Lewis Powell during his assassination attempt on Secretary of State William Henry Seward; inside the Secretary’s house, Powell had a confrontation with Seward’s son, Frederick. When his gun misfired, Powell struck Frederick several times with the pistol, fracturing his skull. Frederick remained in a coma for days but survived the attack.

The pickaxe seized from Lewis Powell on the night of his arrest. After hiding for three days, Powell arrived at Mary Surratt’s boarding house at 11 p.m. on April 17, 1865. Investigators were interviewing Mary when Powell knocked on the door, claiming that he had been hired to dig a ditch. The officers asked Mary if she recognized Powell. She replied, “Before God, I not know this man and have never seen him.”

The comb and toothbrush taken from Lewis Powell at the time of his address and used as evidence during his trial. In his testimony, George Atzerodt recounted meeting Powell for the first time: “a strong, stout man—no hair on his face—rather good looking—wild look in his eye—he carried a toothbrush with him.”
